ASSESSING THE ATTITUDES OF AL-NEELAIN MEDICAL STUDENTS TOWARDS LEARNING COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON HEALTH PRACTICES IN CLINICAL WARDS, 2022

Abstract
Background and objectives: health system is maintained through good doctor-patient communication. We aim to find a correlation between student's attitudes and views regarding communication skills learning and their practice of communication skills at clinical wards. Additionally, we aim to compare these attitudes between males and females.
Methods: cross-sectional study with 161 participants from Al-neelain university faculty of medicine. We used communication skills attitude scale (CSAS) to assess student’s attitudes and opinions, and Medical Communication Perceived Self-Efficacy (ME-CO) to assess their clinical communication. We then assessed the correlation between them and compared both gender groups in regards to positive and negative attitudes.
Results: there were positive correlation (0.29 / P<0.01) between positive attitudes and clinical communication, while an inverse correlation (-0.187 / P<0.05) between negative attitudes and clinical communication was detected. Females appeared to have more positive attitudes than males when comparing their mean ranks (P<0.05), but mean ranks comparison regarding negative attitude was not justified due to unequal distribution.
Conclusion: our study showed the influence of communication skills attitudes on student’s clinical skills. Females tends to have more positive view towards studying communication skills. There’s a significant amount of students with negative attitude. These results emphasize the importance of good quality of learning, as a predictor of student’s practice at clinical wards.
